External Penetration Testing

GSI utilizes trained former law enforcement professionals to conduct our penetration testing.  Our clients are provided with a statement of work and a comprehensive report detailing the penetration testing, surveillance and observations.  The Penetration Test Operations are photographed and videotaped wherever possible by our agents. Penetration tests are intended to determine whether and by what means it was possible to infiltrate the site without legitimate and authorized access, and how far and to what extent the penetration might reach.

Physical external penetration testing is a security assessment that simulates a physical intrusion from an outside threat to test an organization’s physical security controls, such as access points, locks, and surveillance systems. Unlike external network penetration testing which focuses on digital systems accessible from the internet, physical penetration testing targets physical vulnerabilities through on-site methods and can include social engineering to gain access to buildings, sensitive areas, or assets.

Physical external penetration testing

  • Goal: To evaluate the effectiveness of physical security measures and identify weaknesses that a real-world intruder could exploit to gain unauthorized physical access.
  • Methodology: Involves simulating malicious actor tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) to attempt to bypass physical barriers.  Agents will utilize piggy-backing employees, simulate deliveries, look for propped open doorways, and other non-confrontational covert means.
  • Includes:
    • Access control evaluation: Testing locks, doors, and other barriers to see if they can be defeated.
    • Surveillance testing: Assessing the effectiveness of cameras and other monitoring systems.
    • Social engineering: Using deception to trick employees into granting access or revealing information.
    • Physical intrusion: Attempting to enter a facility, restricted areas, or access sensitive data without authorization.

CPTED Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Assessments

GSI is now offering CPTED Assessments by a trained professional who has achieved the NICP (National Institute Of Crime Prevention) Professional Designation.

Our Assessments include but are not limited to: Corporations, schools, houses of worship, municipal buildings, medical facilities, public areas such as parks and parking lots.

A CPTED assessment (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design assessment) is

a professional evaluation of a property’s physical environment to identify security hazards and recommend design changes that help deter crime and enhance a feeling of safety.

The core purpose is to reduce opportunities for crime by strategically influencing human behavior and perceptions of the space, rather than relying solely on mechanical security measures like locks and alarms.

Key Principles Evaluated

The assessment is based on four to six key CPTED principles, focusing on how the built environment can be optimized:

  • Natural Surveillance: Maximizing visibility through strategic lighting, window placement, and clear sightlines to ensure that people can easily observe public spaces and potential criminals feel exposed.
  • Natural Access Control: Guiding the movement of people and vehicles through a space using elements like fencing, landscaping, and clear entry/exit points to limit unauthorized access.
  • Territorial Reinforcement: Using physical design elements such as signs, property markers, and different pavement designs to clearly define private, semi-private, and public areas, which encourages a sense of ownership and makes intruders stand out.
  • Maintenance and Management: Ensuring the property is well-maintained (e.g., prompt graffiti removal, timely repairs, clean common areas) to signal that the area is cared for and monitored, which deters criminal activity.
  • Activity Support: Encouraging legitimate, positive use of public spaces to ensure more “eyes on the street” and a stronger sense of community.

The Assessment Process

A CPTED assessment is typically conducted by a certified practitioner or law enforcement professional and involves several steps:

  1. Data Gathering: Reviewing local crime reports and interviewing property managers or staff about existing concerns or incident patterns.
  2. Site Inspection (Daytime and Nighttime): A physical walk-through of the property to evaluate current conditions against CPTED principles. A nighttime inspection is crucial for accurately assessing lighting conditions and effectiveness.
  3. Analysis: Identifying specific vulnerabilities, such as blind spots, unmanaged access points, or poor lighting.
  4. Reporting: Providing a detailed, comprehensive report that includes findings, photographic evidence, and prioritized recommendations for improvements.

Benefits

The benefits of a CPTED assessment include proactively reducing crime, improving the quality of life, increasing feelings of safety, enhancing property values, and helping property owners reduce liability risks.
